Sandpaper discs

Sandpaper discs are usually made by processing sandpaper rolls with flocking or double-sided adhesive, then cutting them with a punching machine and special circular molds.

GET INFORMATION
  • Description
  • A "sandpaper disc" refers to a disc-shaped sandpaper.

    Structure and Classification

    • Structure: Sandpaper discs are usually made by processing sandpaper rolls with flocking or double-sided adhesive, then cutting them with a punching machine and special circular molds.

    • Classification

      • By adhesive type: They can be divided into self-adhesive sandpaper discs and flocked sandpaper discs. Flocked sandpaper discs are further divided into non-porous flocked sandpaper discs and porous flocked sandpaper discs. The porous ones allow debris to be discharged through the holes during grinding, improving grinding efficiency.

      • By size: Common sizes include 3 inches, 4 inches, 5 inches, 6 inches, etc. The applicable diameter range of sandpaper discs is between 23mm and 235mm.

      • By sand surface: There are white, red, and yellow sand surfaces; less common are blue and green sand surfaces.

      • By raw material: They mainly include silicon carbide sandpaper discs and brown corundum sandpaper discs. Silicon carbide sandpaper discs can be divided into green silicon carbide and black silicon carbide ones; brown corundum sandpaper discs include ordinary brown corundum, calcined brown corundum, iridium-plated brown corundum, and semi-friable corundum sandpaper discs, etc.

    Selection Methods

    • According to the grinding material: Different materials require different types of sandpaper discs. For example, when grinding metal, silicon carbide or brown corundum sandpaper discs can be selected; for wood, general alumina sandpaper is sufficient; for softer materials like plastic and rubber, finer grit sandpaper should be chosen to avoid scratching the surface.

    • According to the grinding purpose: For rough processing, such as removing a large amount of material, deep scratches, or rust, coarser grit sandpaper like 40# or 60# should be selected; for fine grinding and polishing, finer grit sandpaper such as 600# or 800# or even finer ones are needed.

    • According to the grinding tool: Ensure the size and installation method of the sandpaper disc match the grinding tool used. For example, random orbital sanders usually use hook-and-loop sandpaper discs, while some small hand-held sanders may use self-adhesive ones.

    Application Fields

    • Woodworking: Used for rough processing of wood surfaces, such as removing burrs and uneven parts, as well as fine grinding to make the wood surface smooth, preparing for subsequent processes like painting and waxing. They are also used in the production and repair of wood products such as furniture, cabinets, doors, and windows.

    • Automobile repair and beauty: Before car painting, sandpaper discs are used to grind the car body surface to remove old paint, rust, scratches, etc., making the surface flat and smooth to enhance the adhesion of new paint. They are also used for grinding and repairing auto parts such as engine blocks and wheel hubs.

    • Metal processing: Can be used for rust removal, deburring, and grinding welds on metal surfaces to achieve the required finish and precision, meeting different processing requirements. They are widely used in machinery manufacturing, hardware processing, and other industries.

    • Plastic and rubber processing: Grinding the surface of plastic and rubber products to improve surface roughness, enhance the appearance quality of products, or prepare for subsequent processes such as printing and coating, such as grinding plastic casings and rubber molds.

    • Construction and decoration: Used for leveling and grinding walls and floors to remove uneven and raised parts, making them smooth and flat for subsequent processes like painting and tile pasting. They are also used for grinding and renovating wooden floors.

    Features

    • Efficient grinding: Compared with regular hand sandpaper, sandpaper discs are more efficient, faster, more convenient, and have less wear in grinding products.

    • Firm adhesion: The self-adhesive or flocked design enables them to firmly attach to grinding tools. For example, sandpaper discs with a thick hook-and-loop design ensure no movement or detachment when grinding the workpiece surface, facilitating operation.

    • Dust collection: Some sandpaper discs have multiple evenly distributed holes, such as 8 holes or 9 holes, which can effectively collect dust during grinding, reduce dust 飞扬,keep the working environment clean, and also help improve grinding results by preventing dust from clogging the sandpaper and affecting efficiency.

    • Strong versatility: With various sizes and grit options, they can be adapted to multiple grinding tools, such as random orbital sanders, electric sanders, pneumatic sanders, hand-held sanders, and can also be used on electric drills through drill adapters, suitable for different materials and grinding scenarios.

    Usage Notes

    • Proper installation: Ensure the sandpaper disc is installed flat and centered on the grinding tool to avoid skewing or loosening, which may affect grinding results and the service life of the sandpaper.

    • Pressure control: Use appropriate pressure during grinding to avoid excessive force, which may cause the sandpaper to wear too quickly or damage the workpiece surface.

    • Regular replacement: When the grinding ability of the sandpaper decreases, the surface is clogged, or it is severely worn, replace it with a new one in time to ensure grinding effect and efficiency.

    • Safety protection: When using sandpaper discs, be sure to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses and masks to prevent dust from entering the eyes and respiratory tract and causing harm to the body.
